Autumn Makeup & Skincare for Women Over 40: The Easy Seasonal Swaps to Make Now
There’s something about autumn that makes us instinctively start changing things.
The sandals disappear, the boots come back out, we swap floaty dresses for knitwear and suddenly a glass of rosé doesn’t seem quite as appealing as curling up with a red.
But while we’re busy changing our wardrobes, there’s one thing many of us completely forget about…
Our skincare and makeup bags.
If you’re still using exactly the same products in October that you were reaching for in June and July, you might start wondering why your skin suddenly feels drier, your foundation isn’t sitting quite as nicely, or the makeup that looked fresh and glowy in summer suddenly looks a little… meh.
This can become even more noticeable for women over 40, when changes in our skin can mean that hydration, texture and the formulas we use become increasingly important.
The good news?
You absolutely DO NOT need an entirely new makeup bag.
A few clever seasonal swaps can make a huge difference.

Why Your Skincare Needs to Change in Autumn
As the temperature drops, humidity changes and the central heating goes on, our skin can start to feel noticeably drier.
If you’ve been happily using a lightweight moisturiser throughout summer, you may find your skin needs a little more support as we head into autumn and winter.
Look for hydrating and barrier-supporting ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, ceramides and peptides, and pay attention to how your skin actually feels rather than sticking rigidly to the same routine all year.
And remember: hydrated skin makes a HUGE difference to how your makeup sits.
Especially on mature skin.
And Please Don’t Put the SPF Away!
Yes, we’re in Britain.
Yes, it’s cloudy.
And yes, you may have forgotten what the sun actually looks like by November.
But SPF isn’t just for summer holidays.
Keep it as the final step in your morning skincare routine throughout autumn and winter too. You may simply want to change the texture or formulation if your skin needs something more hydrating during the colder months.
Should You Change Your Foundation for Autumn?
Possibly, and there are two things I want you to check:
Colour and formula.
Firstly, your skin tone may change as your summer colour fades. That foundation that matched you perfectly in August can suddenly start looking a little too warm or orange by October.
Secondly, think about the formula.
If your skin becomes drier during autumn, a very matte or heavy foundation may suddenly start settling into areas you’d rather it didn’t.
Often, improving your skin prep and moving towards a more flexible, skin-like base can create a much fresher result.
Because whatever the season, my rule remains the same:
I want to see YOU before I see your foundation.
The Hottest Autumn Makeup Colours for 2026
Now for the fun bit.
Autumn 2026 is bringing us some absolutely gorgeous shades: burgundy, cranberry, berry, chocolate, espresso, terracotta, plum, forest green and navy.
Before you panic, I am NOT suggesting you wear all of them at once.
And you definitely don’t need to recreate a catwalk makeup look to pop to Tesco.
The easiest way to embrace a makeup trend, particularly if you’re over 40 and have spent years working out what you actually feel comfortable wearing, is to take one element and make it work for you.
Here are some of my favourites.
🍷 Burgundy, Cranberry & Berry
Berry and wine shades are perfect for autumn, but you don’t have to jump straight from your everyday nude to a dramatic burgundy lipstick.
My easy autumn switch: try a berry-toned lip liner underneath your usual lipstick or lip balm.
It instantly gives your everyday lip a richer autumn feel without making you feel like you’re wearing somebody else’s makeup.
Cranberry also works beautifully on the cheeks.
Just keep it soft.
Think I’ve been for a lovely brisk autumn walk rather than I’ve fallen face-first into a bottle of Merlot.
🤎 Chocolate & Espresso
If you’ve been wearing black eyeliner for the last 30 years, here’s one of the easiest changes you can make:
Try espresso brown instead.
Smudge it gently into the lash line rather than creating a hard stripe. You still get definition, but the overall effect can feel much softer around mature eyes.
Brown lips are also having their moment again.
And before my fellow 40-somethings start having 1990s flashbacks, I’m not necessarily suggesting a solid chocolate lipstick.
Try a rose-brown, pinky-brown or soft chocolate lip liner underneath a lipstick you already love.
Modern, wearable and no time machine required.
🍑 Terracotta, Cinnamon & Warm Rose
If you’ve spent summer wearing peachy or brighter blush, autumn is the perfect time to move into something slightly richer.
Think terracotta, cinnamon, muted mauve and warm rose.
But here’s the important bit:
Before you buy another product, look at what you already own.
Could one of your lipsticks double as a cream blush?
Could your bronzer become an eyeshadow?
Could a warm blush be softly swept through the crease of your eye?
Makeup doesn’t know what it says on the packaging.
One of the things I teach during my makeup lessons is how to get much more from the products you already own.
🌲 Plum, Forest Green & Navy
These shades might sound slightly terrifying if your eyeshadow collection currently consists of beige, slightly darker beige and the adventurous one you call taupe.
But they’re surprisingly easy to wear.
My trick?
Start with eyeliner rather than eyeshadow.
Swap your normal black or brown pencil for deep plum, forest green or navy and smudge it right into the lash line.
From a distance, it doesn’t scream COLOURED EYELINER!
It simply adds interest and can make your natural eye colour really stand out.
It’s one of the quickest and easiest ways to update your makeup for autumn without changing your entire routine.
The Autumn 2026 Makeup Trend I Love Most
Despite all these gorgeous colours, one of my favourite things about makeup right now is the continued move towards skin actually looking like skin.
Because makeup shouldn’t be about covering every line, freckle or sign that you’ve lived a life.
And it certainly shouldn’t be about trying to make yourself look 25 again.
For me, great makeup over 40 is about knowing how to enhance what you have now.
Your face may have changed.
Your skin may have changed.
Your colouring may have changed.
So why are you still applying your makeup exactly the way you did 15 years ago?
Before You Buy Any New Autumn Makeup…
Have a proper look through your makeup bag first.
Ask yourself:
- Does my skincare feel hydrating enough?
- Is my foundation still the right colour and formula?
- Are the brighter colours I loved in summer still working for me?
- Could I introduce one richer autumn shade rather than buying a completely new makeup collection?
And perhaps most importantly…
Do I actually know how to use all the products I’ve already bought?
Because sometimes you don’t need more makeup.
You just need to know what to do with it.
Learn How to Do Your Own Makeup – For the Face You Have Now
This is exactly what we do during my Learn Your Own Face Makeup Lessons at my makeup studio in Orlingbury, Northamptonshire.
We go through your existing makeup bag together, work out what’s earning its place and what’s definitely ready for retirement, and identify the products, colours and techniques that work for your skin, your features and your lifestyle.
I’ll teach you how to recreate your makeup yourself rather than sending you home with a beautiful face and absolutely no idea how to do it again.
No Instagram face.
No trying to make you look 20 years younger.
And no 37-step routine you’re never going to do on a Tuesday morning before work.
Just makeup that works for you, now.
So, if your wardrobe has already had its autumn update but your makeup bag is still firmly stuck in July, perhaps it’s time to give that some attention too.
